Remodeling projects are not all built alike, so it's important to find the right contractor for your specific project. Whether you're starting a kitchen remodeling or a roofing project, look for a contractor who specializes in that type of home improvement project.

Kitchen remodeling tends to be a specialty, as it involves coordinating many tradespeople and sometimes overseeing the design and product selection. Before getting an estimate from a contractor, ask about his or her experience with kitchen remodeling.

Ask the Right Questions
Does the contractor provide kitchen design services or will you have to hire an architect or kitchen designer for that portion? Does the contractor work with certain cabinetry lines or install many brands? When remodeling a bathroom, ask about the contractor's experience with tile installation or shower stalls. The answers to these questions will help you narrow down the best contractor for your project.

Get a History
After narrowing down your choices, ask to see the contractor's previous work. When doing a room addition, look at how the old house blends with the new. For bathroom remodeling, check out the tile cuts around the toilet or in unusual parts of the shower. This will provide hints as to the contractor's attention to detail.

Also talk with the contractor's reference to find out if he or she was a good fit for the project. Did the contractor offer creative solutions for any home improvement issues? Did the contractor hire the right subcontractors for the job? Were the workers professional and respectful of your belongings? Did the home improvement job go smoothly?

There are many good contractors out there, but they all focus on different home improvement areas. By asking the right questions, you can find a contractor with the specific skills you need.
