What is Liberty? Or even more important, what are the responsibilities of liberty? Seriously consider your answers. We pride ourselves on being the greatest nation on earth, but, like liberty, what are the responsibilities of our greatness?
America has the capacity to create the foundation for world peace. The strength of our people and the strength of our spirit can accomplish this task. There is nothing this country can't do when we bond together as one. Nothing.
Our first task is to stop trying to create peace through war. It's an oxymoron and doesn't work. Never did. Wars may eventually end and then you say you have peace, but peace can be brought about in other ways and at any time you choose. War is not the answer to our problems. In fact, war is simply the proof of our inability to be truly fair and compassionate with the world around us. We need to understand and know that as we hurt and destroy those around us, we are also hurting and destroying ourselves as well.
Don't confuse war with defense. We have the right to defend ourselves and to defend other countries that are in need of help, but our motive needs to be genuine and purely defensive. If we aim to punish, we will only escalate things beyond our best interests and beyond the best interests of all men..
Consider the reasons that wars are created. Often they involve going after natural resources such as land and oil. If we could act with the innocence of 4 year olds and share our resources amongst all nations, there would be no reason for a war to start. If the trillions of dollars put towards our war efforts were turned to feeding and educating the poor of this country and all other countries around the world, the need for war would dissipate.
Why were we attacked? Because other countries and people fear us. They fear what we have done, what we might do, what we haven't done and what we may never do. Remove these fears and there would be no reason for any person or country to attack us. Attack can only occur as a result of fear.
To remove fears, we must take the first step in stopping our attacks, making repair where we destroyed and seriously looking at the world and seeing where it's needs are. Of all the nations in the world, we are the most blessed because of our innate sense of charity and good will. We need to push those limits even higher and extend our blessings to those that do not have them. It is in giving that our greatness is fully extended. It is in true giving that we never desire nor ask for anything in return, knowing that as we help those around us, we are also helping ourselves as well.
Before you discount any of what I say, consider that the world has never been at peace. Somebody is always at war, whether we are lobbing shells, or lobbying for the Death Sentence, we have been unable to fix our problems and usually revert to the only wrong and insane solution ....to kill and destroy...then we'll have peace.
We tend to attack the effect of the problem, but rarely try to correct the cause. Case in point -- we're destroying a country in order to kill a band of terrorists. When we finally kill them, we will tell ourselves we are safe, but the kind of safety we will have created is an illusion because we didn't fix the cause of the problem. The terrorists are just the effect of the problem. The cause of the problem is our inability to work fairly with the world.
We have more resources and opportunities than almost all the other nations put together. People in other countries who are suffering or going hungry or being attacked, know that this country could help...and they turn on us when we don't. It's human nature. We know we should help too. So why don't we? Because many of us can be very self-important and just plain unfair...and if you're not, many of our political decisions are. Most of us can't consider giving away what we worked so hard far...what we've earned....what is ours.
Yes, many of you do make donations and even go abroad to help. But we need to do this collectively and as a nation, not just as small support groups. All your efforts are appreciated so very much, but it's not enough. Donating $20 to feed the hungry in another country is a noble gesture, but showing real concern for a starving and struggling people is another thing.
Nothing on this earth belongs to any of us, and if you are blessed with a business or profession that enables you to have more, you should be filled with joy about having been given the ability and opportunity to use your blessings to help others in the world. You don't have to give up all you have, but the next time you spend $50,000 for a new painting or $30 for your 100th DVD, consider that many people in the world are hungry, looking for a place to live or in need of medication.
Our government needs to change, but we must change first. Our government is the effect of the problem, not the cause. We are the cause. We need to change, then the government will change and then the world will change. Each one of us that makes a movement in this direction, makes it easier for the next one to make their move. It's time to evolve into a better people.
The truth of this message can be interpreted many different ways and even twisted, but its true form can't be changed. The truth is that we must stop attacking one another and start helping one another...first as individuals, then as neighbors, then as cities, then as counties, then as states and finally as countries. It all starts with you.
