Why are butterflies free
And yet we are not?
Oh sure; free opinions,
Free press, freedom of speech,
Maybe even free lunch!
But are we truly free?
Free to fly, free to love,
Free to feel, free to be,
Free to reach happiness?
Pressure; to perform, to
Achieve, to become what
Others thought we'd be!
Responsibility,
To him, to her, to them
To your very own self?
First is last, and last first,
Or, do we even need
To be like that butterfly...free?

Jim Fleming - Jim lives in the Pacific Northwest, and loves the beautiful interplay of the seasons with the climate and geography there. He believes that the mountains, stormy seacoasts and deep old-growth forests all contain healing for our inner selves and would draw the poetry out of a stone, or anyone else...like him.
