Trompe L'Oeil
- The Decorative Art for the Home of Yesterday and Today -

by
Terrie K.

When you picture a mural do you imagine a huge wall of graffiti in California? Perhaps you envision the recent patriotic mural that was all over the news after the September 11th bombing? Both of these are great examples of mural art. But, they don't begin to show the versatility of this art form and what it can do for your decorating options.

Trompe L'Oeil Murals are all the rage in the decorating forum. This is no wonder, since they can transform your personnal space into true works of artTrompe L'Oeil Murals are all the rage in the decorating forum. And this is no wonder, since they can transform your personal space into true works of art. Trompe L'Oeil is a French term meaning to "trick the eye". It uses techniques that make a two dimensional paintings appear to be a three dimensional area or object.

The art of Trompe L'Oeil originated in ancient times when the Romans and other cultures decorated the walls of their villas and structures with paintings that simulated columns, niches, draping cloths and swags, and open windows with stunning views. Since this time, Neoclassical designs have often included this design element. It was extremely popular in castles, cathedrals and fine estates of the 1700's and 1800's.

Modern artists have taken this art form to new dimensions by adding modern styles and forms, as well as expanding the style to include murals of almost any subject matter and style imaginable. There are architectural features which include pediments, windows, moldings, niches, archways, doors, and columns. There are low relief sculptures painted in monochrome called grisailles. There are landscapes, seascapes, and sky views, as well as still lifes and faux finishes that fake the appearance of fine surfaces.

Murals can be commissioned from many different talented artists. They may be painted on canvas, in the studio, and shipped to the site to be applied to the wall by professional wallpaper personnel or they may be painted on site directly onto the wall or surface. Both processes have certain positive qualities.

Certain projects require that the work be done onsite on the surface itself such as faux finishes for columns and other architectural features. Onsite work allows more perfect matches to other surfaces and features and the painting becomes a permanent part of the structure.

This is especially convenient and cost effective for our out-of-area clients and artists. This process also allows the owner the option of later moving or even framing the artwork if they should have need to, such as with a move to a new residence or a remodel.

They all have one thing in common...They make a simple space spectacular! They add character and interest, especially to an area that lacks a focal point. They camouflage unattractive elements in architecture designs. And they can even be used to improve the apparent proportions of an area or room. Most of all, they do one amazing thing...They make an area or room unique, personal and absolutely beautiful.

Your imagination is your only limit! Whether you envision a traditional neoclassical design or a comical statement to bring a smile and a giggle to your viewer's lips, this art technique can be enjoyed by everyone. You may picture a foyer of opulent grandeur or a whimsical fairy tale nursery, a rustic outdoor landscape in your den or an exotic tropical island paradise in your bathroom. This painting technique can take you away... to your very own fantasy world!, be it another land on this plane of existence or one that exists only in the windows of your mind.

Trompe L'Oeil and Murals can also be a powerful element in your business! They have become a unique, appealing and affordable way of adding personality and uniqueness to businesses rather than the typical wall coverings or decorations. If you were to compare the technique with other decorating options, you definitely get more for your money with Trompe L'Oeil and Murals. Murals bring you business to your workplace. A mural is a billboard size advertisement for your business. By using their murals as a landmark, you can draw attention to your business. Clients say the growth in their sales made their investment well worth while! Think of what unusual creative ideas could do to attract more traffic flow to your business or office. The possibilities are endless.

The most impressive aspect of a Trompe mural is that you are actually getting an original piece of art!. There are no two murals on the planet that are exactly the same. Different artists create different styles. And different spaces and topics create different results. You will have the only painting of it's kind anywhere in the world. Murals make a statement about you. They transport you to "other worlds". Quit simply, they transform your personal space into a work of art.
