This barrage of bullets are excellent reminders of the versatility you have at your disposal when taking upon the challenge of designing a beautiful room.

Horizontal lines in a room make it look wider (think clothing). vertical lines make it look taller (again, think clothing). Curved lines are romantic and free forms are informal. One line should dominate the room. All shapes can be reduced to their dominant lines. In the most successful room, the dominant lines lead the eye gracefully to the focal point (again, think clothing).
The stronger the contrast, the less you need for impact. Unequal contrasting proportions are more pleasing than equal ones.
Variety in textures refreshes the eye. Use compatible textures in dominant roles, with contrasting textures as accents.
Light airy, smooth textures make a room seem larger. Heavy, thick textures make a room look smaller. Textures have the same effect on furniture pieces.
Use repeating motifs in patterns, repeated colors or repeated lines to create rhythm in a room.
Determine whether you want texture, color or pattern to set the dominant theme for a room, then make the other two elements secondary to the main impact theme.

Proportion colors, textures and patterns throughout a room are necessary to entertain the eye.
Scale furniture to the room size and to the size of the adjacent object. Always consider the size in relation to its suitability for its function.
Balance furniture from top to bottom as well as from side to side. Anchor all pieces with a larger piece beneath them to keep a room from looking top heavy.
Determine the center of interest and balance furnishings either formally or informally around it. Use the principals of balance to arrange all other groupings as well.
Use accessories to enhance the proportion and balance of furniture. when you vary the decor, rearrange it for balance.
