Balance in a room appeals to our sense of order, harmony and poise, conversely. If all the furniture in a room or all of the objects over a fireplace mantel look heavily clustered at one end, it is distracting. Start by creating balance in a whole room, then take the individual vignettes within the room and arrange them gracefully.

The illusions of size and width are produced by visual effects. Save time and muscle strain by determining the illusion quotient or I.Q. of each object before you place it into position. Of same sized items, those with bright or dark colors, dominate those with less intense colors. Those with more textures, larger and bolder patterns or unusual outlines, seem heavier to the eye.

Things we know from experience are heavier items have more visual weight. A bowl of pussy willows may take up much more area than a small terra-cotta sculpture, but to our eyes, the sculpture has more impact.
