In decorating, textures are almost tactile in impression, while patterns are playgrounds that offer variety to the eyes. You have an innate sense of rightness that makes understanding the principles of good balance and good decorating easy. We are going to help you sharpen that sense.

Table SettingThere are four things that when mixed with color, make an interior as exciting as a beautiful painting. With all the specific rules there are really no rules that can't be broken, but often analyzing a problem in terms of basic design principles leads quickly to a beautiful solution.

Analyze the lines and shapes in your room, including your furniture, then either emphasize a pleasing element or design magic to subdue an undesirable one. If there isn't one, then build in the major lines that your eyes will follow with ease. Just listen and learn.

Vertical lines seem lofty and serene and masculine. Think of churches and huge ceilinged rooms. Curved lines are lyrical, spirited and romantic. Some examples, Louis the 14th and 15th furniture, caribole legs and paisley fabrics.

Free form shapes and curves are associated with Oriental modern designs and give a sense of motion. Remember the longest line will be dominant . . . a curving sectional sofa is a dominant curved line . . . a bracket shelf system gives a horizontal line . . . a Shaker dining chair is definitely vertical in line and feeling.

Window ViewTo make parts of a room relate and harmonize with one another, use one dominant type of line. Also, use one dominant color and texture . . with contrasting elements to add interest. You must be sure the dominant elements are strong enough to be clearly defined. When too many elements are used in a room, a room loses its sense of direction and order.

A beautiful table setting leads the eye rhythmically from one element to the next with a sense of motion and order. A well decorated room does the same thing. Ideally, your eye is immediately drawn to the center of interest of the room, then travels around that grouping . . happily discovering new shapes and conformations that are pleasing and refreshing.

Next, the eye is drawn to other areas to repeat the act of discovery. The placement of objects on your coffee table, for example, may form a perfect still life, full of varying textures that please the eye. A large window that frames a beautiful view is a natural focus that automatically draws the eye.
