Although neutrals often are called "no color", they have very great impact on other colors and belong in any discussion of color. They give other colors the added dimension of lightness and darkness, brightness and dullness.

The neutral colors are Black, Greys (made by mixing white and black), Browns and Beiges (made by mixing brown and white). Brown is merely grey with various degrees of warm tones added to it . . . tones being colors.

Neutrals have a natural affinity to all colors because they can be produced by mixing a color with its opposite, therefore, every neutral has within it, a little bit of the color you want to use it with . . . . . Magic! It's compatible and looks great. All color schemes benefit from the use of neutrals, which offer relief from colors that are dominant in your scheme.

Neutrals, the true matchmakers of the color world, enhance and strengthen the other colors with which they are used. Color schemes that are built solely around neutrals are restful, serene and sophisticated, however, it takes an extra quotient of flair with textures and patterns to give neutral schemes life without adding colors.
